The ruling concerning non-mahram brothers sending letters to sisters by post

Question:

What is the ruling concerning non-mahram brothers sending letters to sisters by post. Also what is its ruling if the letter is beneficial like writing to a woman versed in arabic literature or poetry?
Answer:

As for posting letters to sisters the origin concerning that is is that it is not permissable if they are from men who are non-mahram, because of that which comes from this by way of fitan (trials) and affairs that require caution, even if she is a woman versed in arabic literature or poetry, because repelling evil takes precedence over bringing about good. The majority of (situations that have lead to) evil consequences (i.e. adultery etc.) have occured due to sending letters between brothers and sisters and due to the likes of this dubious manner of becoming aquainted.
