(The Elevating One)

The Exalter, The Elevator, The One who lowers whoever He willed by His Destruction and raises whoever He willed by His Endowment.

Allah is Ar-Rafi, The One who chooses whom will be raised in rank. He elevates mankind above worldly possessions and selfishness.

From the root r-f-‘ which has the following classical Arabic connotations: to raise or elevate something to uplift, to take it up to make high, lofty to exalt, make honorable, make eminent to bring a thing near.

O you who have believed, when you are told, “Space yourselves” in assemblies, then make space; Allah will make space for you. And when you are told, “Arise,” then arise; Allah will raise those who have believed among you and those who were given knowledge, by degrees. And Allah is Acquainted with what you do. (Quran 58:11)

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِذَا قِيلَ لَكُمْ تَفَسَّحُوا فِي الْمَجَالِسِ فَافْسَحُوا يَفْسَحِ اللَّهُ لَكُمْ ۖ وَإِذَا قِيلَ انشُزُوا فَانشُزُوا يَرْفَعِ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنكُمْ وَالَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْعِلْمَ دَرَجَاتٍ ۚ وَاللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ ‎﴿١١﴾‏

And that was Our [conclusive] argument which We gave Abraham against his people. We raise by degrees whom We will. Indeed, your Lord is Wise and Knowing. (Quran 6:83)

وَتِلْكَ حُجَّتُنَا آتَيْنَاهَا إِبْرَاهِيمَ عَلَىٰ قَوْمِهِ ۚ نَرْفَعُ دَرَجَاتٍ مَّن نَّشَاءُ ۗ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ حَكِيمٌ عَلِيمٌ ‎﴿٨٣﴾

الْخَافِضُ

AL-KHAAFID

(The Reducer)

The Abaser, The One who lowers whoever He willed by His Destruction and raises whoever He willed by His Endowment.

Allah is Al-Khaafid with this name he abases the proud, the oppressors, and rebels. He chooses the ones to be humbled, softened or made gentle. He decides to raise or weaken people as a test.

From the root kh-f-d which has the following classical Arabic connotations: to lower, weaken, depress to make humble, abase to relax, diminish, subdue to make gentle, tranquil, easy to deal with to soften, make easy, facilitate.

We have certainly created man in the best of stature; Then We return him to the lowest of the low, Except for those who believe and do righteous deeds, for they will have a reward uninterrupted. (Quran 95:4-6)

لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ فِي أَحْسَنِ تَقْوِيمٍ ‎﴿٤﴾‏ ثُمَّ رَدَدْنَاهُ أَسْفَلَ سَافِلِينَ ‎﴿٥﴾‏ إِلَّا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ فَلَهُمْ أَجْرٌ غَيْرُ مَمْنُونٍ‎﴿٦﴾

And as for man, when his Lord tries him and [thus] is generous to him and favors him, he says, “My Lord has honored me.” But when He tries him and restricts his provision, he says, “My Lord has humiliated me.” (Quran 89:15-16)

فَأَمَّا الْإِنسَانُ إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ رَبُّهُ فَأَكْرَمَهُ وَنَعَّمَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَكْرَمَنِ ‎﴿١٥﴾‏ وَأَمَّا إِذَا مَا ابْتَلَاهُ فَقَدَرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقَهُ فَيَقُولُ رَبِّي أَهَانَنِ ‎﴿١٦﴾

It will bring down [some] and raise up [others]. (Quran 56:3)

21.

الْبَاسِطُ

AL-BASIT

AlBassit

(The Extender)

The Englarger, The One who constricts the sustenance by His wisdom and expands and widens it with His Generosity and Mercy.

Allah is Al-Baasit, The One who amplifies all abundance, who makes the way wide open. He gives plentiful to whoever he wills and reaches out a helping hand to all mankind. Allah gives provision and mercy as he wishes.

From the root b-s-t which has the following classical Arabic connotations: to expand, enlarge, extend to grant abundance, to provide amply to spread, widen, to make spacious to extend a hand.

Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over? And it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned. (Quran 2:245)

مَّن ذَا الَّذِي يُقْرِضُ اللَّهَ قَرْضًا حَسَنًا فَيُضَاعِفَهُ لَهُ أَضْعَافًا كَثِيرَةً ۚ وَاللَّهُ يَقْبِضُ وَيَبْسُطُ وَإِلَيْهِ تُرْجَعُونَ ‎﴿٢٤٥﴾‏

“Verily, Allah Almighty stretches out his hand by night to accept the repentance of those who sin by day, and he stretches out his hand by day to accept the repentance of those who sin by night, until the sun rises from the west.”

الْقَابِضُ

AL-QAABID

AlQabid

(The Restricting One)

The Constrictor, The Withholder, The One who constricts the sustenance by His wisdom and expands and widens it with His Generosity and Mercy.

Allah is Al-Qaabid meaning whatever he wills comes to be. He is the one who enriches and makes poor, he decides to withhold something, or make something scarce. He is the taker of all souls at the time of death and he stretches his hand out to the believers so that they may repent and turn to him.

From the root q-b-d which has the following classical Arabic connotations: to take in the hand, clutch, lay hold of to grasp, grip, seize, hold firmly to have absolute ownership of something, barter to contract, shrink, draw together, make scanty, make scarce to contract the heart, i.e. distress, depression, lack of joy.

Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over? And it is Allah who withholds and grants abundance, and to Him you will be returned. (Quran 2:245)

Allah extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]. And they rejoice in the worldly life, while the worldly life is not, compared to the Hereafter, except [brief] enjoyment. (Quran 13:26)

اللَّهُ يَبْسُطُ الرِّزْقَ لِمَن يَشَاءُ وَيَقْدِرُ ۚ وَفَرِحُوا بِالْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَمَا الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا فِي الْآخِرَةِ إِلَّا مَتَاعٌ ‎﴿٢٦﴾

اَلْعَلِيْمُ

AL-ALIM

AlAlim

(The All-Knowing One)

AL ALIM MEANING:

The Knowledgeable; The One nothing is absent from His knowledge

Allah is Al-Alim, Allah’s knowledge is comprehensive and extends to all that is seen and unseen, apparent and hidden, present and future, near and far. His knowledge precedes and he is intuitively aware of all things, even before they happen. He is the is the knower of all details and nothing goes unnoticed or unrecorded. Truly, He is the Omniscient One.

MENTIONS FROM THE QURAN & HADITH

From the root ‘a-l-m which has the following classical Arabic connotations: to have knowledge, be cognizant, be certain to be aware, thoroughly informed to be find out, gather information to have intuitive knowledge to have firmly rooted knowledge of the minute particulars to act according to knowledge.

Indeed, as-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah . So whoever makes Hajj to the House or performs ‘umrah – there is no blame upon him for walking between them. And whoever volunteers good – then indeed, Allah is appreciative and Knowing. (Quran 2:158)

۞ إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِن شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ ۖ فَمَنْ حَجَّ الْبَيْتَ أَوِ اعْتَمَرَ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْهِ أَن يَطَّوَّفَ بِهِمَا ۚ وَمَن تَطَوَّعَ خَيْرًا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ شَاكِرٌ عَلِيمٌ‎﴿١٥٨﴾‏

Never will you attain the good [reward] until you spend [in the way of Allah] from that which you love. And whatever you spend – indeed, Allah is Knowing of it. (Quran 3:92)

لَن تَنَالُوا الْبِرَّ حَتَّىٰ تُنفِقُوا مِمَّا تُحِبُّونَ ۚ وَمَا تُنفِقُوا مِن شَيْءٍ فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ بِهِ عَلِيمٌ ‎﴿٩٢﴾‏ ۞

Muhammad is not the father of [any] one of your men, but [he is] the Messenger of Allah and last of the prophets. And ever is Allah, of all things, Knowing. (Quran 33:40)

مَّا كَانَ مُحَمَّدٌ أَبَا أَحَدٍ مِّن رِّجَالِكُمْ وَلَٰكِن رَّسُولَ اللَّهِ وَخَاتَمَ النَّبِيِّينَ ۗ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ بِكُلِّ شَيْءٍ عَلِيمًا ‎﴿٤٠﴾

Do you not see that Allah is exalted by whomever is within the heavens and the earth and [by] the birds with wings spread [in flight]? Each [of them] has known his [means of] prayer and exalting [Him], and Allah is Knowing of what they do. (Quran 24:41)

أَلَمْ تَرَ أَنَّ اللَّهَ يُسَبِّحُ لَهُ مَن فِي السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَالطَّيْرُ صَافَّاتٍ ۖ كُلٌّ قَدْ عَلِمَ صَلَاتَهُ وَتَسْبِيحَهُ ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ بِمَا يَفْعَلُونَ ‎﴿٤١﴾‏
